Aha Moments: A Few Reflections on Wellness
A simple gesture of kindness creates a ripple effect!
Before I leave home each day to run errands or meet an associate for lunch, I establish a positive outlook and set an intention on making a difference in someone’s life.
Last week, during one of the busiest mailing days of the year, I encountered an abundance of good will at the post office. It started with the door being held open for me by a gentleman who was leaving the building. As I smiled and said, “Thanks, have a wonderful holiday,” he replied, “Merry Christmas to you”! I stepped inside and was delighted to see an unusually short line—only seven people—and two were moving up to the counter.
A lady with a walker filed in behind me, and as I greeted her, she grumbled, “Oh, no. This will take forever. You’d think they’d have more clerks during the holidays.” I explained that this was nothing compared to the long wait I chose to avoid at a larger post office earlier that afternoon. She was surprised and said, “Oh, I guess I shouldn’t be complaining, huh?” We both laughed. A few minutes later, it was my turn, and I told her to please go ahead of me. At first she declined the offer: “After all my complaining?” But I insisted. Upon completing her transaction, she turned in my direction, waved and thanked me again.
Meanwhile, the man now standing in back of me, hiding behind a mountain of packages he was holding, dropped his mailing form. The patron behind him picked it up and offered, “Here, let’s place your packages on this table until you’re called.”
In less than ten minutes, good vibrations were permeating the neighborhood post office. And the three courteous and patient clerks created more ripples of positive energy.
The line had doubled when I left. And I imagined the ripple effect of good will continuing on and extending out beyond the postal walls. Each day, live the fullest expression of life possible by initiating a ripple of positive vibrations.
