Aha Moments: A Few Reflections on Wellness
“If we wait until we’re ready, we’ll be waiting for the rest of our lives.”—Lemony Snicket
When Criss, regional producer and marketing associate for The Dr. Pat Show – Transformation Talk Radio approached me about hosting my own series, I was hesitant. Of course I was honored that this internationally-acclaimed, award-winning show had reached out to me, but those overwhelming feelings of self-doubt tried to dominate the platform.
Honestly, I was shaking in my slippers! Deep down, though, I knew I should seize this opportunity, but was wondering if I had the courage to step into the unknown. One reassuring voice said, “Yes! Here’s an opportunity for growth”! And the self-defeating voice said, “No! You’re not prepared and you don’t have the experience.”
“Too often, the opportunity knocks, but by the time you push back the chain, push back the bolt, unhook the two locks and shut off the burglar alarm, it’s too late.”—Rita Coolidge
Realistically, we are seldom “ready” when these opportunities come knocking. We must be willing to take the risk and trust the process. Intuitively, I knew this dream offer would elevate me to a new level and place me in a position to engage a larger audience. But still, stepping out of your comfort zone can be intimidating.
After several candid discussions with Dr. Pat and Shelley, the show’s regional producer and marketing associate, I decided to take the leap without knowing all the details. Since I tend to be a perfectionist and overanalyze everything, this was a big spring for me. I was familiar with giant leaps of faith, since I had broken my own broad jump record last year with the launching of Lifestyle 120. What I have learned is that you don’t have to know all the answers. Meditate, ask for Divine guidance, then go with your feelings. Trust yourself to make a wise decision.
“Entrepreneurship is a full contact sport. You’ve got to throw your whole self in.”—Fabienne Fredrickson
So, rather than contract for my own show, I decided to co-host a six-month series with Dr. Pat, test the air waves and tune my ear for radio. With just one episode in the radio archives, I admit the experience has already boosted my confidence and stretched me professionally.
I have the utmost respect for radio production. There are so many intricate steps and a lot of planning required before a show goes live. From the host’s point of view: Do you have the right equipment? Are your earphones working properly? Are you connected to Skype audio? Is the volume properly adjusted? Do you have appropriate content? Are you prepared? And from the production team’s point of view: Everything! Too much on that mind-boggling list to review here. But all leading up to the point when Benny, the man behind the scenes at The Dr. Pat Show says, “You’re on!”
The Dr. Pat Show team is phenomenal! I appreciate the individual attention provided by Dr. Pat and her talented staff. Jesica, production manager and producer; Kim, senior executive producer; and Linda, senior executive producer have been super supportive and encouraging. The positive energy is palpable! Dr. Pat’s high notes are still resounding in my ear, “T.K., this is going to be absolutely amazing!”
My personal team is pretty amazing as well. Julie, my graphic designer, of Pen & Mouse Design House, prepared some attractive radio banners. And Elizabeth, my web developer, of MEA Website Design, created my radio page and activated the radio show links. Special people are placed on your path to help get you where you’re supposed to go.
Two of my business objectives are to inspire others and share wellness news with the world. Talk about synchronicity! Could a full-time radio career be in the forecast? Oh, the possibilities! We’ll just have to dial the call-in number and listen for the cue.
