Aha Moments: A Few Reflections on Wellness
Established by President Lyndon B. Johnson 52 years ago, February is American Heart Month. Although we should be focused on heart health every day of the year, this month is dedicated to educating people about ways to protect our beloved vital organ.
Name three things you are doing to support the loving heart that has been ticking every second of your entire life? Waiting…
Don’t skip a beat. Adopt a proactive lifestyle that not only honors your heart but also helps prevent chronic diseases.
How can I love thee? Let me count four ways…
Graze on greens!
Your heart loves the sight of green, so include a variety each day. Dark, leafy greens like collards, cabbage, spinach and kale are available year-round and are rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
Laugh a lot!
A deep belly laugh provides instant, positive results. Laughter is the best prescription-free drug available. Get your heart pumping by getting your chuckle on.
Stress less—rest more!
Minimize stress by scheduling breaks throughout the day. Relaxation eases tension and allows your body and mind to recharge. What a wonderful way to tell your heart how much you care.
Shake a leg!
Your body was designed to move, so plan a get-fit program. And if you have a sedentary job, periodically get up from your seat and move your feet. Aerobic exercise keeps your heart healthy.
The heart is a truly special muscle. It beats for us all day, pumping blood to every part of the body. So take good care of this vital pump. And create a happy heart by regularly telling your ticker how much you appreciate it!
