Aha Moments: A Few Reflections on Wellness
Do you need a break from your regular routine? How about a quick vacation, all expenses paid? Plan an excursion without the help of a travel agent.
Get ready to take a walk in nature. Although you seldom need a reason to walk, walking in nature boasts many healthful benefits. It’s great for the body, mind and spirit—a whole health experience.
Walking in nature is a multisensory adventure—a chance to commune with your natural surroundings on an intimate level. Think about it. Taking a hike activates all the senses: vision, hearing, smell, touch, and munching on that tasty, crispy apple you brought for a snack, will remind you of its roots.
Now, in order to really reap the full benefits of your safari, you must turn off all audio devices. That’s right, put your headset and phone in your fanny pack. You will survive without your tech tools for an hour. You know you want to. And you owe it to yourself. Detach from the everyday grind and attach to the wonders of your tour. Power up with a much-needed flight from the stresses of the day.
If you plug up your ears with iTunes and plan next week’s business meeting with a colleague during your trek, you will be distracted from your peaceful encounter with nature and diminish the experience on ALL levels.
Because you are preoccupied, you will miss the whisper of the wind caressing your ears. The shape of the beluga whale floating in the clouds. The nuances of the varying terrain rising underfoot. The nine shades of green displayed in the arbor on your right. The croaking frog perched on the rock glistening in the pond. The coo of the mourning dove wooing from the treetops. The delicate bouquet of jasmine wafting in the breeze. The mysterious drooping branches of the willow weeping on the earth. The monarch butterflies playing hide and seek…
Unplug your ears and free your hands. You don’t want to miss the show—this live concert performed on the natural stage—JUST FOR YOU!
Strolling through nature can provide excellent therapy. Allow this particular trail to communicate with you. What is it telling you? What are you drawn to? These natural experiences offer tranquility and rejuvenation. Tune in to your inner soundtrack and pay attention to the lessons. Is nature messaging you the solution to that question you’ve been pondering all week?
Allow yourself to stop, breathe, look, listen, touch, and smell the flavors of your complimentary getaway. Interpret the language of the landscape. Clear your mind, recharge your battery and savor a walk—unencumbered.
