Aha Moments: A Few Reflections on Wellness
This may come as no surprise but I’ll say it anyway. Diets don’t work long-term! So stop wasting your money on gimmicky products and absurd, dangerous, fad weight-loss programs. Whew! I can sense a sigh of relief. With that weight off your shoulders, you can rest easy. Almost…
You still need a plan, if you want to improve your health. It may be in your best interest to set your intention on one simple, smart, can-do lifestyle change that will help you reap multiple health benefits, not just temporary weight reduction.
Algorithm for Better Health
0 + 1 = 6
Your positive lifestyle change begins with what you may be holding in your hand right now—your cup. By replacing soda and other sugary beverages with healthy alternatives, you will be initiating a sustainable health improvement plan.
According to the American Heart Association, excess sugar has been linked to obesity and a higher risk of chronic diseases.

The Algorithm for Better Health is your new way of drinking.
Now, let’s reduce the mathematical algorithm into digestible portions. Here is how you begin with nothing and finish with more:
0 Currently, you may not have a reliable plan that will benefit you for the long haul. So, begin with a clean slate and commit to a fresh start.
1 Now add one.
Release soda and other sugary drinks from the menu. How? Begin by drinking more water. Our bodies consist of 60% water, and because most don’t get enough of this vital fluid, it’s time to drink up! What? Okay, okay—I hear you. Plain water can be somewhat mundane. But with a little creativity, you can turn the mundane into a satisfying experience. The following suggestions will provide more interest to your drinking water and help support your new lifestyle change of eliminating excess sugar.
- Mix one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar (and a pinch of stevia if desired) to a cup of water and enjoy hot or cold.
- Squeeze half of a lemon over a cup of crushed ice to help you stay cool and hydrated on warm days.
- Add lime juice to your cup of water and relish on the run.
- Place basil leaves and sliced cucumber in your large container of water, shake and savor while working.
- Toss your favorite herbs and berries into your container of water for a refreshing infusion.
- Chop an orange and a few pieces of peel into your container of water, shake and sip during the afternoon.
- Replace the juice in your smoothie with water for a lighter blend.
- Steep herbal tea in a hot cup of water to soothe your senses after a stressful day.
Getting the idea? The list of possibilities is endless. No chemicals, no additives, no gimmicks or unsubstantiated promises. Just clean, refreshing water with natural gifts from the garden.
Now, don’t get distracted. Focus on one major commitment right now. Too many intentions will only set you up for disappointments. Once you are successful with this one commitment, you can concentrate on additional lifestyle goals.
Pour out your former way of thinking about diet, and pour on a fresh sense of your best self, through this one, manageable lifestyle intervention.
6 Do the math. Your ONE manageable lifestyle change boasts at least six health benefits that will help you:
- Improve overall health and well-being
- Experience the energy you need to accomplish daily tasks
- Remain focused longer
- Reduce your midsection
- Get your eight glasses of water each day
- Consume more vitamins, minerals and antioxidants from fresh produce
That’s an impressive list based on ONE shift!
The numbers add up to success. By rethinking the contents of your cup, you have jump-started your way to better health. Cheers!
The choice you make today regarding your lifestyle will ultimately decide the quality of life you will experience tomorrow.
