Exercise Your Private Muscles — Are Kegels Right For You?

A daily fitness routine works wonders for your body, mind and spirit.
Have you noticed that when you adhere to your exercise regimen, you reinforce a can-do attitude? Exercise helps us practice those Spiritual LIFE Principles™ I told you about in the first post of this series. When we honor our intentions, we are expressing love, integrity, faith and enthusiasm, which helps us live a more dynamic life.

What are Kegels?
When you exercise, you expect to “see” some action and results, right? Well, there’s a fitness tool that I would like to talk about today that you can’t actually see, but you can definitely feel. They’re called Kegel exercises, named after Dr. Arnold Henry Kegel, an American gynecologist. If you’re not familiar with this term, Kegels are routines that focuses on our bathroom muscles, if you will.

For women, Kegels are sometimes recommended to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles — the bladder, small intestine, and rectum; and the female muscles — the uterus and vagina. Has your gynecologist spoken to you about this?

I really like Kegels because, like most exercises, they are preventive measures that delay the aging process. Years ago, my gynecologist prescribed the following daily procedure:

Step One
Squeeze or contract the pelvic floor muscles for a few seconds, then relax for a few seconds. Repeat ten times.

Step Two
Pulse the pelvic floor muscles continuously for a few seconds, then relax for a few seconds. Repeat ten times.

Go for thirty to forty each day. Just three-minute sessions a few times a day can tighten the entire region down there.

The cool thing about Kegels is you can work your intricate muscles anywhere, anytime — while you’re driving to an appointment; as part of your regular, daily self-care ritual; while standing in the checkout line at the grocery store. No one will have a clue what you’re doing. Ha! My favorite time is right before arising in the morning and at bedtime.
