Do you sometimes feel isolated and wish there was a way to meet like-minded people? We are social beings, and building friendships is one of the most rewarding experiences, at any age. I believe our main purpose in life is to love. But as we get older, it’s not always easy or comfortable to actively seek new and meaningful relationships. So what can you do?
Try to find your tribe within a spiritual community. This can be a safe, comfortable and non-threatening place to mingle and share fellowship with like-minded people. Perhaps you already belong to a spiritual community but haven’t participated in many of its events. Now is the time to expand your experiences and join in on some of these activities.
If you’re not a member of a spiritual family, consider visiting a new center or faith group every week for the next few months to determine which one feels right for you. You don’t have to commit to membership while exploring your options. Get involved. Participate in the social gatherings, attend sacred services, and sign up for educational offerings and seasonal programs. Have tea with the members; share and ask questions about the community.
Check in with yourself often. Each time you engage in an activity, ask yourself if the experience was positive and uplifting. You want to build on the positive. Meet, greet and enjoy connecting with like-minded people within the safe and comfortable surroundings of a spiritual community.
If your motivation to join a spiritual community is to address the issue of isolation, you may receive more than you expect—you might also find spiritual growth and transformation. Further, you have placed yourself in a position to bless another person. Someone else may be looking for your friendship to address her feelings of loneliness. By nurturing loving relationships, you are making the world a better place.
Is it possible for you to develop and thrive in a spiritual community of your choice?
Set a loving intention for yourself and plan to attend a different faith service this week in your community. Take a deep, cleansing breath. Now close your eyes and visualize how this lifestyle change can prepare you for your amazing second half.
