Slap Yourself To Life Each Morning With Qigong

If you need something to spring you out of your warm, cozy bed in the morning, slapping is a great way to energize your entire body.

Several months ago, I added an amazing fitness tool to my arsenal of health-promoting habits. I like to tweak my routine periodically to keep myself motivated.

Before I introduce you to my personalized slapping practice, let me share some inspirational resources for the art of qigong (chi-gong).

Inspiration For Qigong Practice

Rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, Qigong (chi-gong) is defined as an internal process that has external movements. Experts describe it as the art that helps prevent disease and prolong life. Think of qigong as a mental, physical and spiritual practice that uses intention and mindfulness to guide your qi or “life force” and enhance your whole body processes. There’s a lot to qigong (breathing, bouncing, swinging your arms, shaking, slapping and various controlled movements) and you will need to arrange time in your schedule to reap the benefits of the entire sequence. I simply pulled out the slapping portion of the routine and incorporated it into my protocol.

There are plenty of accomplished qigong (chi-gong) trainers on the Internet, and I just happened upon one that I think you will enjoy. Are you familiar with Master Chunyi Lin? I tapped into his lessons on YouTube and got hooked. Master Lin has numerous videos on qigong (chi-gong) techniques and fully explains the twelve energy channels or meridians. He shares how he healed himself from certain health issues using qigong and why he has committed his life to this healing practice.

If you want to find out more, begin with two of Master Lin’s introductory videos called “Activate your Healing Qi with Chunyi Lin,” and “Master Chunyi Lin’s Heal Yourself in Just 5 Seconds The Qigong (chi-gong) Technique.”

And I’d like to share a few more resources just on qigong (chi-gong) slapping points and louhan tapping. Check out a short video called “Qigong Slapping Points” with Gail Whang and “Staying Healthy — Qigong & Louhan Patting” with Don Fiore.

In order for any fitness regimen to work, we must embrace the challenge, adjust the routine to support our needs, and commit to regularly executing our plan.

You know that you can personalize any routine, right? I’ve tweaked what I learned about slapping myself and created my own procedure.

My Personalized Slapping Procedure

All of the qigong slapping videos I watched are performed standing. My sequence begins before getting out of bed. This way it doesn’t compete with other morning activities.

I start by lightly slapping all parts of my head, including my cheeks and chin. I use my fingers to lightly tap the areas around my eyes and under my nose, and then pull my ears and earlobes.

I shift my body to continue with my neck, chest, shoulders, arms and armpits, groin, buttocks, along my ribcage, and as much of my back that I can reach.

Then I raise my legs to slap the front, back and sides of my thighs, knees, lower legs and the bottom of my feet.

I slap every area ten times, except my breast. This tender area requires a gentle pat. And as I’m going through the motions, I’m sending loving thoughts to each part of my body. The process goes quickly and takes about five minutes.

Those who support slapping say it stimulates blood flow, increases circulation, and quickens collagen synthesis. Slapping has become an integral part of my morning spiritual practice. And while waking up every inch of my body, I’m also boosting my lymphatic system — invigorating myself before jumping into my day.

Consider This

"Qi gong therapy, as well as other branches of Chinese medicine, can be reduced to two simple principles: the cleansing of meridians to achieve harmonious energy flow, and the restoration of yin-yang balance." -- Wong Kiew Kit
