Love. Spirituality. Compassion. Inner Wisdom. Trust Your Smart Heart!

Follow your heart.
Listen to your heart.
Trust your heart.

How many times have you heard these statements?

Down through the ages, the heart has been associated with love, spirituality, compassion and inner wisdom. But how do you go about trusting your heart?

“A good heart is better than all the heads in the world.” — Robert Bulwer-Lytton

A few years ago, I attended an awe-inspiring online event coordinated by Steve Farrell, president and worldwide executive director of Humanity’s Team, a global spiritual movement that supports the truth of Oneness. In one of the sessions, Dr. Deborah Rozman and Howard Martin from the HeartMath Institute spoke on “Tapping Into the True Intelligence of Your Heart: Your Most Powerful Tool for Self-Improvement.”

Research indicates that your heart is intelligent!

Did you know that your heart has 40,000 neurons? Isn’t that amazing? Dr. Rozman says your heart is like your brain in that it can sense, feel, learn and remember. And this centrally-located “other” brain is an information-processing center that sends messages to the big brain at the top about what’s going on with you.

Many people tend to compartmentalize each organ and system in the body and focus on its specific function. But every part must work harmoniously for optimal performance.

Now think about your heart for a moment and where it’s strategically located — near the center of your body, where it pumps the blood that keeps you alive, right? Well actually, your heart is more than a blood pump — it’s a critical communication center.

According to the HeartMath experts, when the brain and heart are on the same wavelength, awesome things can happen. So how can we synchronize the communication between the heart, brain and rest of the body so we can achieve a balanced state? Through mindful breathing.

Learning to breathe through the heart is a fresh technique that you may want to add to your daily rituals.

Let’s practice.

Place your hand over your heart and close your eyes. Focus your attention on this beautiful organ as you breathe deeply and evenly. Feel your heart’s natural flow and rhythm. Are you beginning to experience peace and clarity?

Dr. Rozman suggests that the rhythm we’re creating signals the rest of the body to get in sync. The process is called “heart-rhythm-coherence” because it’s initiated by the heart. When we intentionally activate this rhythm, we can experience balance and heightened performance.

And once we do experience this state of balance, it becomes easier and more natural to “follow your heart.” You learn to draw on your heart as a source of wisdom, to guide and support you. As you do, you reap the ultimate benefits of following your heart: Alignment. Self-empowerment. Elevated consciousness. Stress reduction. Well-being. Harmony. Love.

Think of it like this: Your brain can help you write the words to a lovely song, but your heart produces the musical accompaniment that transforms your piece into a glorious masterpiece.
