The Transforming Power Of Greens

This year is all about reinvention and transformation.  To be your best, there’s a lot you can do nutritionally to support your health. Today, let’s focus on one nutritional powerhouse — greens!

Why are greens good for you?
Greens pack a powerful punch of essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytonutrients and fiber, transforming you from the inside out.  And greens can support the new you by safely and naturally detoxifying your body.  They are your abundant supply of chlorophyll, the natural green pigment that supports your overall health.  Also, because greens are super low in calories, they can help keep you lean.  According to the National Institute on Aging, citing a report in the journal, Neurology, greens have been associated with slower age-related cognitive decline.

Want to reap the benefits of the transforming power of greens?  Invite these vegetables and herbs into your daily menus:

Vegetables:
Spinach, romaine lettuce, curly endive, arugula, Swiss chard, kale, collard greens, cabbage, mustard greens, watercress, bok choy, turnip greens and more…

Begin with the greens you are most familiar with, then train your palate to appreciate a wider variety.  Don’t think you have to limit greens to one particular meal.  I will often throw a handful into my morning smoothie and decorate my lunch plate with assorted shades of green.

Herbs:
Green, leafy herbs boast amazing medicinal properties and immune support.  Adding a little of the following to your recipe will enhance the flavor and provide a gorgeous, fragrant aroma to your dish.

Parsley, coriander, mint, dill, basil, thyme, oregano, rosemary, tarragon, chives, cilantro, bay leaf, and more…

Nourish your body with the vitamins it needs to flourish.  Make greens a part of your daily preventive protocol.

Consider This
Please note that while greens can transform your health, they should be part of a balanced meal plan consisting of a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables; nuts, seeds and legumes; whole grains; lean protein; and healthy fats.  Reducing your intake of highly processed foods and selecting clean, whole foods as close to their natural state as possible will help promote wellness.

Four Action Steps to Nourish, Transform and Flourish
• Set a loving intention to add more greens to your plate this week.
• Begin with the greens you like and then start incorporating new choices to your daily dishes.
• Think about how including greens will promote better health. Can they replace other less-healthy items in your diet? What will taste best with healthy foods you already enjoy?
• Close your eyes and visualize how this lifestyle change can prepare you for your amazing second half.
